Which African companies ‘get’ social media?

We love infographs, you love infographs. We hate, however, people who describe themselves as ‘Social Media Gurus’ or ‘Hashtag Experts’ and consider them the snake oil sellers of the 21st century.

Fortunately, so do the folk at Joburg comms agency Cerbera. Even though if anyone was entitled to use those titles, it would be their staff. They’re putting together a report on how African companies use social media – and how it’s different to the way foreign firms do – which will be unveiled at the Social Business Africa conference in a couple of weeks’ time. As a teaser, however, they’ve sent us this infograph of their key findings

Egypt’s mobile operator Mobinil tops the chart as the company that understands 21st century communications best on the continent, with local firms SABC and Woolworths also getting a look in at the top ten.

While Cerebra does a good job of cutting through most of the bullshit that surrounds social media and business, it doesn’t quite pass the htxt.africa test for human speak. Companies are companies and brands are hot things made of iron. Are we being picky or did we read too much Naomi Klein in our collective youth? Here’s that infograph in full.
