First League of Legends player gets professional athlete visa

It didn’t take long from the announcement that players of popular competitive RPG, League of Legends (LoL), would be able to get professional athlete visas, to it actually happening.

This past weekend Danny “Shiphtur” Le, a Canadian citizen, was granted a professional athlete visa, and he’s now eligible to legally ply his trade on American soil. That means not only entering competitive events, but also earning money doing what he does best: click on enemies in a video game. His visa couldn’t have been granted at a more convenient time, either: he’s now able to train for the world championships, taking place in October, and stand a chance to take home some of the $1-million prize money.

Now that the cogs are in motion it’s up to other developers with competitive games to campaign for having their players recognised as athletes – that means DOTA, StarCraft 2, Counter Strike, Street Fighter, and more, will soon be more than just TV games you play instead of doing homework.
