Sony’s Xperia Z2 preemptively takes the fight to Samsung

We knew that a lot of things would be announced at Mobile World Congress – but we didn’t quite expect Sony to unveil a successor to the 5-month-old Xperia Z1.

The company has seemingly taken on a rapid release schedule, with the first Xperia Z being announced at CES in January last year, and its successor, the Z1, was announced in September last year. Now, it’s got the Z2 – something it’s hoping will steal the limelight from Samsung’s Galaxy S5, which will be unveiled later this week.

Inside the slightly larger Z2 sits the same 20.7-megapixel Exmor R image sensor that’s been gaining Sony a lot of praise. The Xperia Z phones definitely have superior imaging capabilities when compared to their peers. However, with a new, beefier Snapdragon 801 processor from Qualcomm, the phone gains powerful processing that allows the image sensor to be used for 4K video recording. It also gains an iPhone 5s-equalling 120fps slow-motion video feature, which should be a hit at parties.

The aforementioned Snapdragon chip runs its four cores at 2.3GHz, and is mated to 3GB of RAM – so on this front alone Samsung’s going to have its hands full, unless it manages to whip out something completely revolutionary. Sony’s also managed to squeeze a 3 200mAh battery into the Z2 while still shaving 0.3mm off the Z1’s thickness.

Everything will look superb, too, on the new 5.2-inch full HD display. This, like its forebears, also uses the company’s Triluminos, Live Colour, and X-Reality technologies. And if bigger screens don’t tickle your fancy, the new noise cancellation tech in the Z2 will. Sony claims that it’s the first digital noise cancellation solution in a smartphone – with 98% effectiveness – so people should hear you loud and clear no matter where you’re calling from.
