Nikon’s new 1 V3 mirrorless wonder

Nikon has announced a new range-topping camera in its mirrorless 1-series line-up. The Nikon 1 V3 sports a new 18MP 1-inch type sensor that has an on-chip phase detection autofocus system covering nearly the entire sensor. The new Expeed 4A image processor allows the camera to shoot at 20fps with continuous autofocus and 60fps in single AF. There is also built-in WiFi, video capture at 1080/60p and the 3-inch LCD screen is touch-enabled and tilts.

What is missing this time round is a built in viewfinder Nikon opting rather to offer an optional viewfinder instead. In some respects, the Nikon 1 V3 ticks all the right boxes against the competition, but the sensor size remains small when compared to the next smallest mirrorless camera sensor – Olympus and Panasonic’s Micro Four Thirds system. They can be forgiven for this, however, when you see the speed this smaller sensor offers and the compact camera body and lenses it makes provisions for as well.

And while this may be the most appealing of Nikon’s mirrorless cameras to date, the V3 unfortunately won’t be making its way to South African shores anytime soon…
