GoPro files for IPO amid more Hero 4 rumours

Dubbed the “most versatile camera in the world”, GoPro is prepping to file for a public IPO after handing in their S-1 documentation to the Securities and Exchange Commission – and is looking for $100-million funding.

There isn’t a lot of financial information about the company available in the wake of the filing, as they fall under the $1 billion threshold for a company to disclosure information.

GoPro’s founder Nick Woodman (who has current net worth estimate of $1.2-billion) explained that the company’s revenue stream has doubled every year since they started in 2004, while adding that revenues reached more than $500 million in 2012. Information from yesterday’s filing revealed that it had a revenue of $986 million for 2013 and $236 million for the first quarter of this year.

But just how many of the tiny, pocket-sized cameras are there strapped to adventure seekers’ heads? Well, they shipped 3.85 million units by the end of last year, and they have already shipped 852 000 units in the first quarter of this year.

The news of the IPO comes after more rumours started to surface that the much-anticipated Hero 4 action cameras would be revealed in June this year.

According to sources, the follow-up version from the hugely-successful GoPro Hero 3+ model will weigh less than 100 grams, feature a 13-megapixel camera, and a new lens that will be optimised for shooting in low light conditions.

“Other additional specifications include electronic image stabilization to facilitate free shake video, an enhanced MCTF with sophisticated sharpening and Multi-exposure HDR with tone mapping as well as dual sensor interfaces. The Remote Viewfinder Playback lets you have a live view of what the GoPro Hero 4 is recording while the double side by side lenses will most likely enable 3D filming,” The Fuse Joplin revealed.

In addition to the new features, it is rumoured to be capable of filming 4K video at 30fps, 1080p at 120fps and 720p at 240fps. The Ambarella A9 dual core chip is said to be at the heart of the new camera, which allows for faster frame rates in H.264 codec.
