Real-time language translations coming from Skype

In an interview at the inaugural Code Conference in the US, Microsoft’s new CEO, Satya Nadella, took to the stage for an interview that lasted over an hour. Of everything that he discussed during his interview by far one stood out beyond all others.

Meet the “pre-beta version of magic” or as it is known right now, Skype Translate. It takes more than 15 years of investment from Microsoft in speech recognition, automated translation and machine learning technologies and combines it together with its $8.5 billion acquisition, Skype.

In the video below you see one of Microsoft’s Skype engineers talking to a colleague in Germany in English, and on the other end she hears his conversation translated to her in German at speeds that are near enough to real-time to not matter.

Sure both of them have been instructed to stick to a very specific script of what phrases are available (and both of them have to speak relatively slowly and enunciate every single word carefully) but it actually works:
