LG G3 South African launch date, prices and bundles

LG’s latest flagship smartphone, the G3, is quite a big deal for us at htxt.africa HQ. Last year the company’s G2 smartphone won our smartphone of the year supertest and set a high standard for the rest of the brand.

The LG G3 will go on sale from Vodacom, MTN and Cell C on the 1st of August for a recommended retail price of R8 999 (although it can already be nabbed from the Orange online store for around R7 800).

Each of the network will have a ‘value add’ bundled with the G3:

  • Vodacom – Official LG wireless charging stand
  • MTN – The Quick Circle cover
  • Cell C – Initial exclusivity on the gold coloured phone

The standout feature on the new LG G3 is, by far and away, the 5.5 inch 1 440×2 560 resolution quad HD display which, as the name suggests, has four times the resolution of a 720p HD display. From our initial hands on with the phone at the launch event we can say that it really is spectacular.

The LG G3 also comes packed with 2014’s latest high-end Android specifications; a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor running at 2.5GHz is paired to either 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage (if you buy it from Orange) or 3GB of RAM with 32GB of storage (if you get it from the local networks) depending on which model you choose.

A 13.1 megapixel camera with laser autofocus which LG claims can lock onto a subject in just 276 milliseconds along with an improvement on the optical image stabilisation that helped make the G2’s camera so good. Supplying the power is a 3 000mAh removable battery with a new graphite cathode that combined with a host of other battery saving techniques will hopefully see that beautiful display lasting through the day.

Is an extra 16GB of storage, 1GB of RAM and an accessory enough to make you wait for the networks, or are you going to grab the LG G3 from Orange?
