Maker Faire Africa delayed, but expands to more Joburg places

There’s nothing quite like the raw and often ridiculous creativity of a Maker Faire, and thus far attendees at Maker Faire Africa(s) have been more innovative than most. So it’s a bit disappointing to find that this year’s event – which was scheduled to take place at Tshimologong Precinct in Joburg as part of the Fak’ugesi Digital Arts Festival next month – has been delayed until December.

It’s disappointing, but staging such a big event with relatively little notice was always going to be ambitious, so hopefully the delay will give the organisers time to curate a most excellent exhibition. MFA is also moving to the Maboneng Precinct and the Museum of African Design, although there will be workshop events taking place at Wits and Tshimologong too. New dates are 3rd-6th December, full text of the announcement is below and details of how to get involved are on the website here.

Maker Faire Africa is pleased to announce our 2014 faire in Johannesburg has just grown! For the first time since we started our fairs, we’re taking our ‘making’ to the streets–literally–setting a new trend (we hope!) in event styles that gives a nod to Africa’s rich tradition of festivals, ritual & drama; a sort of Maker Carnival that celebrates Africa’s relentless ingenuity.

We’re delighted to be partnering with Johannesburg’s ‘cultural laboratory’, the Museum of African Design, located in the heart of Johannesburg’s Maboneng District, to bring you this exciting street-style maker festival, including a Maker Exhibit that features intriguing new inventions from South Africa (and other African countries, too), a Pop-Up Maker Space where the public can try out new tools & technologies, meandering ‘maker-performers’ who will engage the crowds in real-time collaborations of making, street meet-ups to discuss the global Maker Movement’s impact on South Africa, and more.

We’re also excited to announce the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) as an additional venue. WITS will host a series of ‘Workshops for Makers’ on their campus, preceding the public faire, demonstrating the powerful impact the Maker Movement is having on the evolution of global education.

Of course, with all this growth, there’s even more to plan!  So, we’ve updated our event dates to December 3-6th 2014.  Which gives you more time, too, to plan how you’ll engage with our faire.

Our Call for Makers will go live on our website on August 15th, and more details on our program will be published here on our website over the next few weeks.  Follow us on Twitter @makerfairafrica for the latest updates.
