Super Wolfenstein HD is a Wolfenstein I’d totally play… and it was made in South Africa

UPDATE: Here’s a reason to feel especially proud of this mod: it was developed by South African game creation outfit Free Lives, the studio behind BroForce and The Expendabros, two incredible side-scrolling shoot-em-ups. I’ve reached out to them to find out if there’s any chance of it becoming a full game, and will share any pertinent info when I get it.

Wolfenstein – the original, not the 2014 reboot – is the grandfather of the first person shooter, and as such occupies a special place in the hearts of older gamers.

So it’s no surprise that it served as the inspiration for a fantastic proof-of-concept at a recent game jam, where modders recreated the first level of the game but with 3D graphics, ragdoll physics and destructible walls, as reported by Kotaku.

The results are surprisingly good, even more so considering the “game” took just 72 hours to put together.

The game is called Super Wolfenstein HD, and because it came out of a game jam and isn’t a commercial release, it’s available to download and play right now, so grab the files from Gamejolt and give it a go.

Check out this cool video clip of a disoriented Super Wolfenstein HD Nazi going ballistic with his machine gun:

The game jam it came from was hosted in November by YouTube star PewDiePie, who challenged Indie developers to make games that “should be enjoyable for the player, but also enjoyable for someone watching a let’s play”. He promised to show the top 10 games on his channel, which is a pretty good deal considering his massive audience and the exposure that would bring.

Personally, I would love it if the team went on to remake the game in its entirety using this format, and would definitely contribute should they decide to Kickstart the project.
