Free Moovit app, the Waze of public transport, now works in Cape Town

Moovit, a free navigation smartphone app for Windows Phone, Android and iOS, now works in the Mother City according to a tweet by Arthur Lenk, the Israeli ambassador to South Africa, Mauritius, Lesotho and Swaziland.

The Israeli-developed app puts all kinds of useful crowd-sourced data about public transport options into the hands of Capetonians, sourced from other Moovit users and the cloud in much the same way as GPS app Waze does to deliver accurate traffic info.

Now, thanks to the app, Capetonians can see everything they need to know about reaching their destinations, making getting around the city a lot easier than before. Moovit displays everything from the nearest transit stop to the anticipated arrival times of buses and taxis, to a detailed overview of your overall journey that includes walking segments and transit transfers. Handy.

By sourcing data in real time, Moovit can provide accurate guesstimations as to how long your journey will take, which is great for letting people know where you’ll be and at what time.

Moovit works in 45 countries, 500 cities and has a user base of 15 million, and now it’s in Cape Town.

Lenk told htxt.africa that “Israel’s Moovit may be our next ‘Waze’ – the app is changing how people use public transportation around the world. I think that we need to get them to link the Gautrain and Rea Vaya [as well] so that people in Gauteng can use this amazing start-up.”

As a Jozi resident, I’m quite jealous, but going on Lenk’s comment it’s very likely just a matter of time before Moovit rolls out here as well.

Interested? Get it for Windows Phone here, iOS here and Android here.
