Pirates will get Windows 10 for free

Microsoft continues to show what a different an organisation it is under Satya Nadella; according to a report by Reuters, people using pirated copies of Windows 7 and 8 will be allowed to upgrade to Windows 10 for free for the first year after it comes out.

That’s right: even people running dodgy (but qualifying) copies will be afforded the opportunity to upgrade to legitimate versions of Windows 10, delivered directly by Microsoft, for no money down.

No further details have been given so it’s unclear at this time exactly how people using pirate copies of Windows 7 and 8 will make the leap to a legit copy of Windows 10. No doubt that news will follow in the coming weeks and months.

In other news, Windows 10 is coming out within the next six months; the official line is that it’s out “this summer” (our winter, naturally), which means anytime between June and the end of August. That announcement came straight from Windows boss Terry Myerson, who said in a Windows blog post, “We continue to make great development progress and shared today that Windows 10 will be available this summer in 190 countries and 111 languages.”

South Africa may suck the hind teat a bit when it comes to tech releases, but I’m pretty confident even we’re included in those 190 countries.

Since Windows 10 was only announced as Microsoft’s latest operating system on the 30th of September last year, this is incredibly fast work on the part the software giant. Clearly, sharing the development with the public and soliciting and incorporating their feedback into the OS by way of the Windows 10 Technical Preview has allowed the company to make changes at breakneck speeds.

Microsoft’s launch window for both Windows 7 and 8 was in late October (2009 and 2012 respectively), making this new date a very pleasant surprise indeed.
