Join UCT to host hackday for child development tech

Early childhood development is crucial to determining a child’s quality of life. Yet in South Africa, only 43% of kids under the age of six are exposed to programs geared

To address challenges faced by South African parents and kids in this area, the University of CapeTown’s Bertha Centre and Innovation Edge, with support from the Silicon Cape, GovHack SA, and Stellenbosch University, will be hosting a hackathon to help dig up and fund possible data-driven solutions.

Developers, digital creatives, data enthusiasts and designers are invited to sign up for the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Hackathon taking place on Saturday June 27th at the UCT Graduate School of Business’ MTN Solution Space in Green Point between 9am and 6pm.

You don’t need any prior experience early learning to apply.

“It is a great way for the Cape Town tech community to give back and provide practical solutions around the processes that the ECD community face,” said Lianne Du Toit, vice chairperson of the Silicon Cape.

Judges will assess the creativity and feasibility of each solution and the best ideas will win cash prizes and have the chance to apply for seed funding of up to R1 million from the Innovation Edge fund.

“Advances in technology offer exciting possibilities for addressing challenges within the early learning space. How do we communicate more effectively with parents about early stimulation? Provide access to educational resources for children living in marginalised communities? Or strengthen early learning practices amongst practitioners who have no access to on-site support or supervision?,” added Sonja Giese, director of Innovation Edge.

“These are some of the challenges we hope to address by innovating for ECD through technology.”
