Uber and Gauteng Metered Taxi Council to meet on Wednesday

As animosity grows towards Uber, the company will be meeting with the Gauteng Metered Taxi Council and MEC for Transport Ismail Vadi on Wednesday.

The meeting later this week is a continuation of the discussions, which started on Friday, aimed at finding a solution to Uber’s operating procedures in the province. The meeting was also attended by Johannesburg’s mayoral committee member for transport Christine Walters.

The Metered Taxi Council is of the opinion that Uber needs to comply with the same rules, regulations and licences as metered taxis.

Vadi said “that talks were extremely positive and held in a constructive spirit”, and that “parties agreed to take active measures to prevent any further acts of intimidation against Uber partner-drivers at pick-up points in and around the City.”

Gauteng’s roads and transport department said that those who attended the meeting agreed to “consider proposals from all stakeholders on the future registration and operations of Uber partners.”

The meeting will also discuss how current metered taxis can be incorporated into Uber, so that there will be a “balance [to] the playing field between stakeholders operating in the same transport space.”
