Hack yourself together some Pokémon holograms

Reddit user Kennywdev (no real name given) has put together something special: the ability to summon Pokémon holograms which you can move around.

We usually give you a bit of preamble, but this is something you need to see in action.

The basis of this modern magic is a reflective prism. Creating “holograms” with prisms is an old trick you can do yourself with a rough pyramid shape made out of a reflective material on top of a screen. That’s exactly what was done here.

A Unity scene scene was created with different views of the Pokémon models which, when reflected onto the prism, creates the three-dimensional hologram.

Finally, the ability to move the holograms. Using tech similar to the Nintendo 3DS’s AR Cards, a pattern on a piece of card is tracked by camera and gives the computer the info it needs to display the right parts of the Pokémon.

The final setup. From top to bottom: the screen, the camera, the prism, the projected holograms and finally the AR cards.

As some users pointed out on the Reddit post that shared the project, this tech would be better used for Yu-Gi-Oh! whose show predominately featured card games which were played out via similar holograms (and sometimes real monsters, and sometimes in other dimensions, but that’s a story for another day).

And to save you the question: our favourite Pokémon is Tyrantrum. It’s a T-rex-dragon-Pokémon, your argument is invalid.
