Say goodbye to Twitter links counting as characters

There is nothing worse on the internet than crafting a really clever tweet, only to realise that you have hit the character limit before linking to a page or attaching photo. Well, if reports are to be believed, Twitter is soon changing that.

According to a report on Bloomberg, the microblogging company has taken a really hard look at how it counts character, and tweeters might be getting a bit of a reprieve. It is said that soon Twitter will not count links or photo attachments in the final 140-character count.

As it stands, links can take up to 23 characters even after it has automatically been shortened by Twitter, so it is fair chunk of change that you lose out on. But if that goes away, you will have more space to express your clever ideas and thought to the world.

Naturally, Twitter didn’t provide any comment and the news comes via “a person who asked not to be named,” so make of that what you will.

According to Bloomberg, “It’s a step in a larger plan to give users more flexibility on the site. Chief Executive Officer Jack Dorsey said in January that the company was looking for new ways to display text on Twitter, and would experiment based on how people use the service. For example, some people tweet screenshots of longer text in articles, or send many tweets one after the other to tell a story.”

This is not the first time that Twitter has changed things to help people out. In March it added a new feature which allows users to add 420 character image descriptions for visually impaired users.
