Free coding lessons available to everyone in Tshwane via free WiFi

Do you live in Tshwane and want to learn how to code but you don’t have internet access or the cash to do so? Worry not, because free coding lessons are now available on the Tobetsa portal, accessible via free WiFi hotspots located in and around Tshwane.

Hour of Code South Africa has partnered with Project Isizwe, the organisation behind TshwiFi (formerly known as Tshwane Free WiFi), to let Tshwane residents access 20 free coding lessons.

The coding lessons, created by Code.org, are available on the Tobetsa online content portal and are specifically targeted to users as young as four all the way up to 18, although users of any age who’ve never learned how to code can also take part.

All of the featured content takes the form of YouTube videos, and school teachers or anyone running a coding programme are welcome to use the lessons in their classes.

For lesson co-ordinators who don’t have a computer, there are a number of “unplugged” lessons they can use to teach younger ones using physical charts and step-by-step guides.

“The free, unlimited access courses promote the development of problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. These important foundations for success in the 21st century are recognised by Project Isizwe as key developmental areas that should be accessible to all South African citizens,” Project Isizwe said in a statement.

Visit Tobetsa from your nearest free TshwiFi zone to get started.
