Map Monday: Kyalami & 44 other areas around SA that will be getting name changes

Here is something that residents of Johannesburg’s Kyalami may or may not know: the name ‘Kyalami’ actually doesn’t exist. This is because Kyalami is the wrong spelling for the isiZulu word, Khayalami (meaning “my home”).

This is why the Department of Arts and Culture is about to rename it, along with 44 other areas around the country, to their correct or new names.

We’re not sure when these new/corrected names will come into effect, but some have already been corrected on Google Maps and various signage, but not officially, according to government records.

Looking at some of the names of the areas, most of them were probably mispelt for various reasons: an oversight by the person spelling the area name, colonial rulers not really bothering with the correct name/spelling or confusion over the correct spelling/name.

The areas are found in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape with most changes happening in the Nkonkobe Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape.

See the map below to see the old and new names.
