AMD fixes Radeon RX 480 power problems with driver update

Earlier this week news surfaced that the AMD Radeon RX 480 was found to be drawing an inordinate amount of power from the PCIe rail.

That problem has now been solved without impacting performance.

The fix comes in the form of Crimson version 16.7.1, which is available right now. According to the release notes issued by AMD, “power distribution has been improved for AMD reference boards, lowering the current drawn from the PCIe bus.”

AMD has also included a new “compatibility mode” in the drivers which will allow users to reduce the card’s power draw without impacting performance.

This has been confirmed by PC Perspective who said, “Considering the extreme power delta we witness from the base 16.6.2 driver to the 16.7.1 with compatibility mode on, measuring no performance delta is a fantastic result for AMD.”

With that said, the card does still appear to draw 5.75A from its PCIe slot. This is higher than the standard of 5.5A, but its close enough to not warrant concern.

The driver update also contains fixes for a number of games including Grand Theft Auto V, DOOM and Hitman.

As we mentioned the Radeon Crimson patch update 16.7.1 is out now for both 32-bit and 64-bit systems.
