Book a cleaner app Domestly wins MTN App of the Year

Domestly, an app that lets you book cleaners from your smartphone in an Uber-style interface, has picked up the prestigious MTN Business App of the Year Award at a ceremony in Joburg tonight.

Domestly is a two-way app, which also works for freelance cleaners to manage their bookings and receive payments. It currently works in Cape Town and Gauteng.

Best Consumer App also went to Domestly. Domestly claims to have created 600 jobs its six months since launch. Other finalists in the consumer included Pick n Pay’s Super Animals and Showmax.

In the B2B cateogry for Enterprise app, iKhokha took the honours. That’s a device and app which lets you accept credit card payments on your phone (not unlike Square). That beat off competition from FNB, MyToyota and Transunion’s car dealer app, 1Check.

The award for Most Innovative App went to parking payment system KaChing. Handy if you hate hunting for change to put in the meter at the mall.

As far as mobile gaming goes, we’re obviously devastated the satirical Nkandla Building Game didn’t take the trophy. Instead it went to the worthy but less topical Friendly Math Monsters. Sigh.

Nkandla Building Game. It's no Flappy Zuma, but they was robbed.

The most tongue twisting category of the night was Best Breakthrough Developer App, which was taken by tutor-booking app, Tuta-Me. Runners-up included the WHO-certified hearing test over a phone app, HearZA and iSpana, an app for booking labourers for work. HearZA did, however, win the Best Enterprise Developer award.

The MTN app awards are now in their fifth year, and previous winners include Snapscan, since acquired by Standard Bank, and on-demand courier service Wumdrop (which went on to raise R1m in funding as a result).

Other apps that made the finals included an Augmented Reality app for real estate sales, Propscan, and a service for booking beauty professionals, Beauty on Tapp. The People’s Choice award went to shopping app MiBrand, which helps you find special offers in retail stores and restaurants nearby.
