#DataMustFall battle heading to parliament?

[UPDATE as at 3:15, 16/09: Tbo Touch is indeed going to Parliament next week. The radio personality just posted a copy of the invite sent to him by the Portfolio Committee on Telecommunications and Postal Services’ chairperson. See below.]

Those who thought the #DataMustFall hashtag was just another passing social media fad may have to think again, as the battle heads to parliament next week.

Radio personality and CEO of TouchCentralFM, Tbo Touch, who started the hashtag during his afternoon show yesterday, announced he’d received an invitation to appear in parliament to discuss the matter.

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Telecommunications and Postal Services will be hosting a public hearing in the National Assembly on the cost to communicate [namely data and airtime costs] on Tuesday, 20th September and Wednesday, 21st September.

In response to a tweet we had sent to Tbo Touch, the committee’s Content Advisor, Jacob Medupe, replied saying he’d like to host him at the committee’s presentation.

A few hours after Medupe had tweeted the invitation, Tbo Touch tweeted that’d the committee had invited him to speak during the hearings.

htxt.africa called the committee’s secretary, Hajiera Salie, who said she was not yet aware of whether or not Tbo Touch will be part of the programme as it was only drafted over the last few days and has not yet been finalised and approved, but that once it is updated, the final programme will be released.

We’ve contacted Medupe to find out more about the hearings and what role they’d like the radio personality to play in them. We’ll post an update to his reply as soon as we have it.

Whether or not Tbo Touch does make it to the hearings what we do know is that the cost of data and airtime in South Africa is guaranteed to be discussed by government.
