Nintendo’s NX will be revealed this afternoon

With Sony and Microsoft making most of the noise at gaming conventions, expos and this Christmas window, one might be forgiven for forgetting momentarily that there’s a third combatant in the console wars: Nintendo.

This may have something to do with the fact that the Japanese platform holder’s last console, the Wii U, didn’t do very well. In fact, to say it was something of a flop – especially after the success of the Wii – is an understatement.

The Nintendo faithful hasn’t given up hope of a comeback, however, and its been following rumours concerning the Wii U’s successor for quite some time now. The Nintendo NX, as it’s presently called, has been in the pipeline for a while now and while there have been reports it may be a portable console, no one really knows for sure.

Nintendo looks set to change this today. Nintendo UK’s Twitter account has tweeted that the NX will be shown off in preview trailer at 3pm UK time today (that would 4pm local time).

Click through the link in the above tweet and you’ll be taken to a holding page where the console will presumably be revealed. According to the blurb on the page, “this preview trailer will serve as Nintendo’s preliminary announcement of information regarding the platform”.

Whether we’ll see any new games for the platform is debatable – Nintendo traditionally plays its cards pretty close to the chest – but we’re hoping we’ll find out what the console is called.

This is the second big gaming announcement set for today. Rockstar Games announced on Tuesday that it’ll be showing off the trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 today. Fortunately that’s only going to happen at 5pm so you don’t have to pick between this and Nintendo.
