Gauteng motorists owe Sanral more than R11 billion in etolls

The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has said that it is owed more than R11 billion in etoll fees.

The figure emerged during a meeting with Sanral executives and Parliament’s standing committee on public accounts earlier this week. The parastatal was questioned about wasteful, fruitless and irregular expenditure to the tune of R1 billion according to a report by EWN.

When asked by DA member of Parliament Tim Brauteseth whether the amount was recoverable a Sanral spokes person responded by saying, “I do not want to know what the law says should be done, what is Sanral’s honest opinion on when we’ll collect that money. If they can’t collect it, how can it become a collectable asset?”

Agency chairperson Roshan Morar said that the Sanral has seen a gradual increase in the amount of etolls being paid but added, “everybody should pay their outstanding amounts.”

On Tuesday the Standing Comittee on Public Accounts (Scopa) said that it was unhappy that the Public Protector had not concluded its investigation into possible irregularities in the appointing of the Electronic Tolling Collections, an investigation that was started in 2012.

Scopa said that etolls are “a major contributor to the financial instability at Sanral” and that the uncertainty surrounding the system needs to be removed. Sanral and the Department of Transport have said that they will work with the Public Protector to resolve the matter speedily.
