HBO hackers issue list of demands

Last week HBO executives and fans of the channel’s numerous televisions shows were greeted with the news that hackers had managed to breach the network’s servers.

While HBO didn’t confirm at the time what had been stolen in its entirety, the hackers alleged that they had 1.5TB of data in their possession. The fact that new episodes from HBO shows Room 104 and Ballers started surfacing seemed to back up this claim.

Now, news has emerged that the people responsible for the HBO hack have issued a list of demands. According to a report on Endgadget, the hackers have sent a video message to the network demanding it cough up a large chunk of money, or more material will be released.

The amount that’s been demanded hasn’t been confirmed; the figure has been redacted in the copies of the message sent to Wired and published on the magazine’s site.

“Our demand is clear and Non-Negotiable: We want XXXX dollars to stop leaking your Data,” it reads.

“HBO spends 12 million for Market Research and 5 million for GOT7 advertisements. So consider us another budget for your advertisements!”

HBO for its part haven’t confirmed whether the hackers will be paid but HBO spokesperson Jeff Cussons told Wired that the network continues to investigate how the hackers managed to breach its servers.

“We continue to work around the clock with outside cybersecurity firms and law enforcement to resolve the incident,” Cusson said.

It’s been a rather bad year for purveyors of quality shows. Earlier this year Netflix was issued with a ransom demand from hackers who had helped themselves to the new Orange Is The New Black series, and were threatening to leak it online.
