Twitter trials increasing its character limit for tweets

The defining feature of Twitter is about to change, though for some folks its changed already.

When Twitter launched in July 2006 the character limit mirrored the character limit of text messages but the world has changed and Twitter recognises that folks get a bit antsy when they can’t fit everything they want to say in one tweet.

“We’re doing something new: we’re going to try out a longer limit, 280 characters, in languages impacted by cramming,” Twitter product manager Aliza Rosen wrote in a blog.

The manager reported that 9% of tweets in English hit the 140 character roof while only 0.4% of tweets in Japanese reach that limit.

At time of writing this character limit increase is only being tested “with a small group of people” and Twitter will be collecting feedback and data before rolling the change out to all of its users.

While Twitter tests this feature out we do wonder how it will be received by users. On one hand many favour the brevity of Twitter, but on the other many more get annoyed when they have to commit crimes against grammar to fit their thoughts into a tweet.

We’re quite looking forward to this change how about you? Let us know in the comments below.
