Crypto-mining website NiceHash goes offline after hackers empty Bitcoin wallet

Cryptocurrency mining website NiceHash has suffered a security breach that has seen its Bitcoin wallet emptied.

The firm announced the breach on social media as well as its website adding that it was investigating the nature of the breach and working to determine the exact amount of Bitcoin that was taken.

“Clearly, this is a matter of deep concern and we are working hard to rectify the matter in the coming days. In addition to undertaking our own investigation, the incident has been reported to the relevant authorities and law enforcement and we are co-operating with them as a matter of urgency,” said NiceHash.

While NiceHash investigates the incident its services have been taken offline for the next 24 hours. The firm says that it is fully committed to restoring the service with the highest security measures.

How much Bitcoin was taken is not yet clear although Coindesk reports that a wallet address circulated by users suggests as much as 4 736.42 Bitcoin was taken. At today’s prices that’s R912 million.

NiceHash has urged users to change all online passwords as a precaution.

“We are truly sorry for any inconvenience that this may have caused and are committing every resource towards solving this issue as soon as possible,” the firm concluded.
