US Swatter charged with involuntary manslaughter

A 25-year-old who made a false emergency call to Kansas police last month, which led to a fatal shooting, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Tyler Raj Barriss also known as SWAuTistic online was arrested in Los Angeles last month after alerting authorities to a hostage situation in Wichita, Kansas.

There was no hostage situation and after police surrounded the home of Andrew Finch on 28th December the unarmed father of two was shot by authorities.

“I never intended for anyone to get shot and killed,” Barriss told KWCH in an interview.

The swatter appeared in court on Friday where he was charged with involuntary manslaughter and could face up to 11 years in prison.

This is not Barriss’ first run in with the law as regards hoaxes. In 2016 he was convicted after calling in a bomb threat to an ABC affiliate. While Barriss was meant to spend two years in prison he was released in January 2017.

The swatter appears to have a long history of crying wolf. Earlier this year Krebs On Security dissected Barriss’ Twitter account and found he had taken credit for over 100 fake phone calls including bomb threats and hostage situations to authorities in the US.
