Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 reportedly won’t have a solo campaign

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 won’t have a single-player campaign, according to sources close to the project who have spoken to Polygon on condition of anonymity.

According to the report, the sources revealed that as Black Ops 4’s 12th October release date approached, it became evident to developer Treyarch that work on the single-player mode would not be completed in time.

Apparently, Treyarch is now focusing on expanding the game’s multiplayer and its much-beloved zombie co-op mode instead. One source revealed that the game may ship with some new co-op modes to make up the package.

Now, here’s where things get interesting. PC Gamer has posted a story citing reports from Charlie Intel that the new co-operative mode may in fact be a Battle Royale, in the same vein as games like PUBG and Fortnite, which if you’ve been paying attention, are runaway smash hits at the moment. Activision also said back in March that it was “keenly aware” of the success that other publishers were having with the Battle Royale genre.

Not only that, shipping a COD game without a single-player campaign isn’t setting a precedent for Activision. Black Ops 3 shipped for the PS3 and Xbox 360 without a campaign and no significant dent in Activision’s sales was reported. Furthermore – let’s be honest – most players buy a COD game for the multiplayer modes these days anyway, and it’s likely Activision wants to lure players fixated on Battle Royale games back to its property.
