Kurzgesagt tackles the world’s plastic problem

If you’d like even more dread and despair this Monday, animated documentary channel Kurzgesagt returns with a new video.

The topic this time around is plastic and, despite the title of the video, it doesn’t just focus on the fact that we keep throwing it on the floor.

Instead it starts out with the invention of plastic and explains why it was such a big revolution. More importantly: it explains why plastic is so prevalent and how it shifted from a special new invention to single-use packaging.

After scarring us with a lot of information about how much plastic is on Earth and how badly it’s disposed of, the video hits on the worst part: we don’t have a good replacement.

The best example they give us is for the infamous plastic bag. These are so cheap and easy to produce that their suggested replacements – reusable cotton bags – would need to be used 7 100 times before it would have a lower impact on the environment compared to the single-use plastic.

The video also touches on plastic entering the food chain which ends with us ingesting a lot of chemicals we shouldn’t before ending on this sour note: we don’t have any clear answers to plastic pollution right now.

Happy Monday everyone!
