Part camera, part printer, Fujifilm introduces the Instax Mini LiPlay

When it comes to the instant camera renaissance, Fujifilm has found a lot of success with its Instax brand, having tapped into some photography nostalgia. Now the Japanese company has a new addition to that lineup in the form of the Instax Mini LiPlay.

They’re billing it as a hybrid instant camera, capable of printing pictures as well as snapping them.

“As with any instax camera, users can snap and print photos directly from the camera. However, the mini LiPlay connects via an app to smartphones, with users then able to print any photo stored on that device. With this feature instax brings together the best of its hybrid cameras, such as the SQUARE SQ20, and its portable smartphone printers, such as the Share SP-3,” the company explained in a press release about the new device.

Fujifilm are also adding something rather interesting to the LiPlay in the form of unique QR codes which playback recorded audio created by the user.

These audio clips, up to 10 seconds long, will feature a QR code along with the printed picture. From there someone who receives said print and QR code and scan the latter and hear the recording.

The LiPLay has onboard storage good for up to 46 images, along with a memory slot compatible with microSD or microSDHC cards to expand things further. The LiPlay app can also be used as a remote to take pictures from a distance, and serves as an editing tool for up for six different filters and 20 frames users may want to try out.

This new hybrid Instax camera will be unveiled locally at Fujifilm’s PrintLife exhibition, taking place at the Sandton City Centre Court from 19th to 24th June, with the company noting that recommended pricing for the LiPlay is R2 499.
