CSIR urges youth to use technological skills for the 4IR

Earlier this week researchers from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) held a press conference where they discussed the impact, opportunities and future skills required by young people to thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

According to SA News, CSIR urged the South African youth to use their technological knowledge and skills as an advantage to thrive during the digital revolution.

“Nobody understands technology better than us young people and that is an advantage. The right time for young people to show the world that we are ready to lead, let’s take the opportunity and make it work for us,” said CSIR researcher in computer vision, Windy Mokuwe.

SA News adds that the CSIR is working on a number of projects and models for robotics operations. The organisation is also developing Autonomous 3D Navigation solution, with it featuring a robotic system that can move between indoor and outdoor environments and navigate autonomously in both, without assistance from GPS.

“Technologies that drive change in the machine learning industry include the Internet of Things, additive manufacturing and cloud computing,” added Mokuwe.

“The CSIR’s research in additive manufacturing seeks to create skills-based jobs in South Africa and aims at knowledge-based economy realised through the 4IR while contributing to set millenium goals,” concluded CSIR senior researcher, Dr Monnamme Tlotleng.
