Google Stadia launching in 14 countries in November, South Africa not listed

In March this year Google Stadia was revealed to the gaming world as a streaming platform that offers a potentially device-agnostic environment for players to enjoy.

At the time Stadia was confirmed for release later this year in the US, UK and parts of Europe, but other details such as pricing were unknown.

That changed yesterday as Google held a press conference detailing what it has in store for Stadia, more specifically that it will launch sometime in November across 14 different countries. Unfortunately for South African gamers that does not include local availability at the moment.

In fact no Middle East or African country is listed among the initial 14, which include the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland.

Should you find yourself in one of those countries, pricing will vary. In the United States, Google Stadia will cost $129 for a Founder’s Edition package, which adds a Chromecast Ultra puck, limited-edition Night Blue controller, “first dibs” on a Stadia username, and two three-month Stadia Pro subscriptions. The Pro subscriptions carry a monthly cost of $9.99, with the controller selling for $69.

Google is currently taking pre-orders for the Founder’s Edition.

As for the titles you’ll be able to play, Google Stadia touts up to 4K resolution at 60fps depending on what device you’re playing on, as well as HDR and 5.1 surround sound.

The titles included in the first wave are as follows:

  • Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2
  • Doom Eternal
  • Doom (2016)
  • Rage 2
  • The Elder Scrolls Online
  • Wolfenstein: Youngblood
  • Destiny 2
  • Get Packed
  • Grid
  • Metro Exodus
  • Thumper
  • Farming Simulator 19
  • Baldur’s Gate 3
  • Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid
  • Football Manager
  • Samurai Shodown
  • Final Fantasy XV
  • Tomb Raider Definitive Edition
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider
  • NBA 2K
  • Borderlands 3
  • Gylt
  • Mortal Kombat 11
  • Darksiders Genesis
  • Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
  • Just Dance
  • Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint
  • Tom Clancy’s The Division 2
  • Trials Rising
  • The Crew 2

Looking the above over it’s a rather solid first wave, and with E3 2019 kicking off this weekend, it should be interesting to see what other titles will be added to the roster by the time November comes.

We’re still on the fence about Google Stadia, especially as it’s not available in South Africa, so we’ll have to wait and see what international publications make of the gaming experience later this year.
