Acer retains world’s lightest 14″ notebook crown with new Swift 5

IFA 2019 kicked off today, or rather the first few press conferences for the annual Berlin-based event did. One of the first companies to showcase its wares was Acer, with the Taiwanese firm taking the opportunity to unveil 2019 refreshes for its Swift lineup.

The offering that piqued our interest, as well as as receiving some stage time in the German capital was the Swift 5.

Known for their lightweight designs, this latest iteration of the Swift 5 retains its billing as the world’s lightest 14″ notebook, which has been constructed from a mix of magnesium-lithium and magnesium-aluminum alloys, the firm notes.

This means it weighs just 990g and is 14.95mm thin, but thankfully that’s the only thing that the Swift 5 is packing. To that end the recently debuted Intel 10th Gen (Comet Lake) chipsets are being introduced to this notebook.

The top of the range offering here is the Intel Core i7-1056G7, which can be paired with a maximum 512GB PCIe SSD storage. Added to this is a 14″ Full HD display, along with a 86.4 percent screen-to-body ratio, as well as being touch-based.

The other notable aspect to the Swift 5 is battery life, with Acer claiming up to 12.5 hours from a fully charged battery. There’s also fast-charging functionality which serves up 4.5 hours of battery life from 30 minutes worth of charging time.

The only detail missing at this stage is local pricing and availability, with both pieces of information expected to be shared in the coming month. Until then hit play on the video below to decide on whether this new Swift 5 is worthwhile upgrading to.
