Nedbank urges customers to use app ahead of tomorrow’s bank strike

Tomorrow – 27th September – the finance union South African Society of Bank Officials (Sasbo) will be initiating a strike to protest retrenchments in the industry. This has lead many to worry about accessing their money during the event, but Nedbank has suggested one way people can get around this.

Earlier this morning Nedbank customers received a message suggesting a way to avoid any problems that the strike may bring.

The suggestion is simply to use the Nedbank Money app, with the full SMS reading:

“Nedbank. Worried about not being able to bank during the upcoming nationwide banking strike? We have you covered: do all your banking uninterrupted using the Nedbank Money app, online banking or SMS banking,” the message states, “Download and register on the Money app now. Go to nedbank.co.za/moneyapp for more info. T&Cs apply.”

The software, available on both Android and iOS, is a general purpose internet banking app which has some added features such as paying for items by way of QR code and freezing your cards should they be lost or stolen.

That latter feature may be of particular interest for many as panic spreads about what you will and will not be able to do while the strike is going on. One fear is that the various banks’ fraud departments will not be open, meaning that lost and stolen cards can be abused until the strike ends.

While we don’t know if this will indeed be the case at the moment, the app is the official suggestion of the bank and Nedbank customers may want to follow it to ensure some access to their money and banking services over the next few days.

It’s also a general suggestion, regardless of which bank you use, to draw cash before tomorrow, and to stock up on some essentials like bread and milk should there be widespread disruptions in banking services.
