Pre-orders open for the Rock Pi S, a tiny quad core maker board

While the Raspberry Pi and Arduino are the two biggest names in the maker board space, smaller products pop up every so often to offer an alternative. The Rock Pi S from Radxa is one such, packing a quad core computer into 1.7 squares inches (43.18 centimetres) and costing just $9.90 for the cheapest option.

To put that into perspective the Raspberry Pi Zero is 6.5 X 3 centimetres, has a single core CPU, and costs $5. That being said the original Zero is difficult to come by and the $10 Zero W is what you’ll likely be buying.

While the size and price of the Rock Pi S does sound promising, it of course comes with some caveats. The $9.90 option has just 256MB of RAM and no storage. The next tier up is $13.90 which moves the RAM up to 512MB, and the $23.99 option retains the same amount of RAM and adds in 1 GB of storage.

On top of this the Rock Pi S really is intended for IOT applications as it lacks a GPU and display outputs.

The rest of the Rock Pi S specs are as follows:

  • Rockchip RK3308 Quad A35 64bit processor
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 1 X USB Type A
  • 1 X USB Type C (data / power)
  • 10/100Mbit Ethernet
  • MicroSD slot
  • 26 pin GPIO header
  • 26 pin voice/audio header

If all of this has you interested in a Rock Pi S, all three versions can be ordered from Seed with an estimated delivery date of 31st October. While you wait for your order to be fulfilled, Radxa has full documentation about the board available for you to read and familiarise yourself with.
