Tesla’s sci-fi inspired Cybertruck looks like the 80s, arrives in 2021

When it was rumoured that Tesla was building an SUV we pictured something sleek with a modern aesthetic, but as it turns out we knew nothing.

Tesla has unveiled the Cybertruck, an SUV that looks as if it was plucked right from the imagination of a filmmaker in the 80s, imagining what the future would hold.

Our confusion with the look Tesla went for aside, the Cybertruck is said to be rather durable.

The SUV features a “nearly impenetrable exoskeleton” as well as an Ultra-Hard 30X Cold-Rolled stainless-steel structural exterior.

The windows are made of armoured glass and while a window did get damaged when it met a steel ball during a live demo, it held up better than most civilian vehicles.

The Cybertruck will take three forms, namely:

  • Single motor rear-wheel drive
  • Dual motor all-wheel drive
  • Tri-motor all-wheel drive

The vehicle’s range varies from 250 – 500 miles (402 –  800km) depending on the model as does the 0 – 60mph time and the maximum towing capacity.

Autopilot is standard in all Cybertruck models.

As to pricing, the Cybertruck starts at $39 900 (~R585 887) for the single motor, rear-wheel drive model and goes up to $69 900 (~R1 026 404) with production expected to begin in late 2021. Those purchasing the tri-motor model will have to wait for production to begin in late 2022.

Despite the timeline, pre-orders for the Cybertruck are now open via the Tesla website.
