Netflix gets streaming rights to all 21 Studio Ghibli films outside of the US and Japan

We have written quite a bit about Studio Ghibli in recent months, especially as certain streaming services have tried to secure the rights to the much beloved anime films that the studio is known for.

The latest piece of news in that regard sees Netflix confirming that it has secured the rights to all 21 Studio Ghibli films for its territories outside of the United States and Japan. The twitter account for Netflix UK and Ireland confirmed the news, adding that the films will be added to the platform starting 1st February.

At the time of writing unfortunately we do not know if Netflix in South Africa will be included with that timeline, but seeing as though there aren’t any restrictions on the anime house’s work locally, there shouldn’t be a problem.

Until official word comes though, we’ll have to wait and see.

If we do in fact get the films starting 1st February, they’ll likely arrive in three batches at the start of each month following February, as that is what has been outlined for the UK and Ireland.

The lineups for each batch (seven a piece) is as follows:

1st February: Castle in the Sky (1986), My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), Only Yesterday (1991), Porco Rosso (1992), Ocean Waves (1993), Tales from Earthsea (2006).

1st March: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), Princess Mononoke (1997), My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999), Spirited Away (2001), The Cat Returns (2002), Arrietty (2010), The Tale of The Princess Kaguya (2013).

1st April: Pom Poko (1994), Whisper of the Heart (1995), Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (2008), From Up on Poppy Hill (2011), The Wind Rises (2013), When Marnie Was There (2014).

With Netflix in South Africa have a fairly limited number of anime options in its catalogue, adding these 21 films would be most welcome.
