LG’s first locally available 5G smartphone is the V50 ThinQ

Over the past 18 months there have been a number of 5G-supporting smartphones that have been unveiled, but South Africa is yet to receive one in an official capacity. That changes today though as LG is bringing the 5G variant of its V50 ThinQ to our shores.

This device was initially revealed at MWC 2019, so it has taken quite some time in getting here. That said SA is still waiting for spectrum to be allocated, so outside of the Rain 5G router option, the broadband standard us yet to be experienced on a smartphone.

Precisely when that will happen remains to be seen, but LG is aiming for the V50 ThinQ to be the first device to cater to it.

To that end the South Korean firm notes that its 5G testing has yielded speeds 20 times faster than that of 4G, so there is quite a lot to look forward to.

In terms of the other bits of hardware on the V50 ThinQ, it is not sporting the very latest, but still an an impressive array.

The processor is an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, with 6GB of RAM on offer to keep things ticking over. Up front a 6.4″ QHD+ OLED display is found, with support for 4K video recording and the usual trio of lenses on the rear (12MP standard, 12MP telephoto and 16MP ultrawide). There’s also a sizeable 4 00mAh battery added to the mix.

Now for the important stuff, pricing and availability, as the LG V50 ThinQ 5G will retail for a recommended R13 599. The device is currently exclusive to Vodacom and available to purchase now. The carrier has two contract options listed – R549/pm for 36 months or R699/pm for 24 months.

Now that LG has its 5G-supporting device on shores, it should be interesting to see if other manufacturers follow suit despite there being no spectrum as of yet.
