Half-Life: Alyx preview locations released, Valve Index to be restocked

It’s a double barrel day for Valve-related VR news as Half-Life: Alyx has some new content available and the Valve Index headset has been announced to be restocked.

The Valve Index was sold out very fast after it went on sale and has remained difficult to come by since. This is something the company is aware of and it will make the headsets available for purchase again soon.

“On Monday March 9th, the Valve Index VR system will be made available again for purchase after having been out of stock for some time. Recent demand for the Index system has been high, so we do expect that available stock on hand will sell out quickly. We will continue to take orders after those units have been sold, so purchases beyond this initial quantity will be fulfilled in the order in which they are received, as supplies increase over the coming months,” an announcement reads.

If you want to be first in (virtual) line the exact time that sale will begin is at 10:00 AM Pacific. That’s 20:00 local time, though you may not want to bother with anything local depending on where you live.

That’s because the Valve Index is not available worldwide. If you head to its store page and find the “not available in your country” message then you’re out of luck, outside of doing things like spoofing your country or doing a third party import.

Something more readily available is two new “preview locations” related to Half-Life: Alyx. These can be accessed via Steam VR Home and, like the game, is free for owners of the Valve Index.

The reason this is more open than the headset itself, is that anyone who owns the Valve Index can host a SteamVR session and then invite others over to check it out. It’s a bit of a workaround and you will need to buddy up to an Index owner, but it’s nice that this was not completely gated by hardware.

“One is an outdoor space taken from City 17 in the shadow of the under-construction Citadel. The other is Russell’s laboratory, where he helps Alyx make plans to take on the Combine. The rendering technology available in SteamVR’s native environments is different than that in Half-Life: Alyx, and the interactivity is significantly lower than what the game itself provides,” Valve writes about these locations.

You can see some regular non-VR images of the spaces below. Both are available in the Steam Workshop too, so click on their names to go the respective pages.
