Teraco is building a second Cape Town data centre

Following the expansion of its data centre in Isando just outside of Johannesburg, Teraco has announced that it will be building a new data centre in Cape Town.

When construction is complete the 30MW data centre will be the second largest in Africa with the Isando data centre (which was recently expanded to 60MW) is the largest.

Construction on Teraco Cape Town 2 (CT2) began in March of this year but as you might expect once lockdown began that threw a spanner in the works.

With some restrictions now lifted in line with level 4 lockdown, construction will continue and Teraco expects the data centre to be complete by Q3 2021.

Once complete there will be eight data halls across 8 000 square metres of usable floor space.

“This new investment in the Mother City is special for us. To date, CT1 has seen four expansions since launching; the historic building currently has sufficient capacity until the new site is brought to market,” said Teraco chief executive officer, Jan Hnizdo.

Of course driving this need for an expansion is demand for cloud services. The Teraco CEO says that proximity to the cloud has become vital for many businesses, especially enterprises.

Of note is that Teraco will be deploying its NAPAfrica interconnection platform at CT2 with a view to growing content ecosystems on the continent.

“Teraco continues to invest significantly into the region’s ICT infrastructure and has built what is now Africa’s largest data centre platform. We take pride in our vendor-neutral offering, with open access to interconnection and world-class resilient data centre infrastructure for all our clients,” Hnizdo added.
