HBO taps Chernobyl director to handle The Last of Us pilot

If you are a fan of the The Last of Us, you are probably eagerly awaiting the release of Part II next week, and trying to avoid any kinds of spoilers. This latest piece has nothing to do with Part 2, but rather the HBO-produced series that is currently in the works.

With Naughty Dog doing an exceptional job on storytelling for The Last of Us, as well as other properties like Uncharted, it’s clear to see why the game is primed for mining into other forms of content.

Shifting back to the HBO series, and according to Variety, the studio is tapping up a director from one of its other popular series to helm the pilot of The Last of Us.

Craig Mazin, who created the Chernobyl series will be working alongside The Last of Us game’s writer and executive director, Neil Druckman, on the project.

The pair will be co-writing and executive producing on the HBO property too, although we’re hoping that the original storyline is stuck to for the core elements of the series. The fact that Druckman, as well as other key members of the Naughty Dog team will also be working on the project, at least gives us hope that it is in safe hands.

For now, no release date has been mentioned for the series, with the same going for a production date, which will no doubt be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As such it may be awhile until we see Joel and Ellie take life on the TV screen.

With PlayStation Productions also set to be a part of the process, perhaps this is just the start of having content exclusive to Sony’s console being turned into TV series and movies.

If that were the case, the Norse mythology take on Kratos in 2018’s God of War would make for an epic movie, but we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves.
