Pokémon Smile sure reminds us of Grush

Just a few minutes ago Pokémon held a livestream showing off some of its new projects. The big news to come from it includes a new Snap game, Café Mix and Smile.

We have to start with Pokémon Smile because it’s the most outlandish of the bunch. Billed as a way to make brushing teeth more enjoyable for parents and children, Smile works the routine into gameplay.

Smile uses a device’s camera(s) to put users into the game where they can use the act of brushing teeth to “defeat bacteria”, reveal Pokémon and catch them. Smile is available on Android and iOS and is supposed to be available right now, but doesn’t seem to be available on either store at the time of writing.

All of this reminds us of Grush, a similar idea that wants to get more kids brushing by turning the whole process into a game. It, however, mostly lives on in a bit of infamy thanks to this Dunkey video.

The rest of the Pokémon Presents livestream had more traditional games in the form of Café Mix and New Snap.

Café Mix is a cutesy matching puzzle game where you swirl icons around until you get a match. There’s more game outside the puzzles as you recruit Pokémon to help and expand the café.

Pokémon Café Mix will be available on the Nintendo Switch as well as Android and iOS. It will be “free to start” which is Nintendo speak for a free app with microtransactions.

Finally the big name in the trio is New Pokémon Snap. It seems like the community has been begging for a new Snap game indefinitely, so it’s good to know that something is finally on the way. Aside from a short snipped of the game there’s just the boilerplate “more information soon” statement.

Outside of these new announcements there’s updates on existing titles. Pokémon Go is being updated to work better during the pandemic and Mega Evolutions are coming to the game. Finally there’s just a reminder that the Isle of Armor DLC for Pokémon Sword and Shield is out today. Max Raid Battles including the legendary Zeraora will be available with a global goal presented to the community in the form of a shiny variant.

There will be another Pokémon Presents livestream in a week’s time on 24th June.
