Intel shuffles its Technology, Systems Architecture and Client Group around

Last week Intel had the unenviable task of announcing that production of 7nm CPUs would be delayed and the release of those chips would only come in late 2022.

On Monday Intel made another announcement, this time around it was about the company structure and a few people no longer working at Intel.

The most notable person no longer working at Intel as of 3rd August is head of the Technology, Systems Architecture and Client Group, chief engineering officer and executive vice president, Venkata “Murthy” Renduchintala.

With Renduchintala’s departure, the Technology, Systems Architecture and Client Group is being split up into separate teams.

Manufacturing and operations will be led by Keyvan Esfarjani who will drive product ramp and build-out new fabrication capacity at Intel.

The Design and Engineering team will be led by Josh Walden while Intel conducts an “accelerated global search to identify a permanent world-class leader.”

Former AMD bigwig Raja Koduri will remain where he is in the Architecture, Software and Graphics group where he will continue to work on Intel’s dedicated graphics card among other things.

Dr. Randhir Thakur will head up the Supply Chain and will report directly to Intel chief executive officer, Bob Swan.

We’ve saved the “best” for last. We use those quotation marks because the Technology Development team is Intel’s beating heart. Here, is where Intel develops its latest tech, that tech includes the now delayed 7nm process.

The Technology Development team will be led by Dr. Ann Kelleher.

“Kelleher has been head of Intel manufacturing, where she ensured continuous operations through the COVID-19 pandemic while increasing supply capacity to meet customer needs and accelerating the ramp of Intel’s 10nm process. She will now lead Intel technology development focusing on 7nm and 5nm processes,” Intel said in a statement.

The big question we have now is whether this shuffle will yield the fruit it needs to.

With the announcement last week this sort of shuffle was bound to happen and it seems that Swan wants to be more involved in the production of Intel’s next line-up of products.

“I look forward to working directly with these talented and experienced technology leaders, each of whom is committed to driving Intel forward during this period of critical execution,” Swan said in a statement.

“I also want to thank Murthy for his leadership in helping Intel transform our technology platform. We have the most diverse portfolio of leadership products in our history and, as a result of our six pillars of innovation and disaggregation strategy, much more flexibility in how we build, package and deliver those products for our customers,” the CEO concluded.
