You can now turn your GoPro Hero8 into a webcam

In recent weeks we’ve seen a few camera makers release software updates to turn mirrorless cameras into high-end webcams, given all the videoconferencing that has been happening of late. Now GoPro is tailoring one of its action cameras, the Hero8, to work as a webcam.

The move makes a lot of sense, especially given the fact that there is a lot less action camera footage being captured at the moment. It will also be a welcome upgrade from many of the built-in webcams that notebooks sport.

“Now that HERO8 Black works as a high-definition webcam, users can easily share wide-angle perspectives that better demonstrate their craft—from homeschooling and art teachers to chefs and aspiring chefs to fitness instructors—to their viewers,” explains GoPro regarding this latest feature rollout.

All you’ll need to setup up the GoPro Hero8 is download the latest firmware update, have the necessary microSD card and card reader for the update, and a USB Type-C cable to connect to your work device.

Unfortunately though, this feature is not available across all platforms at the moment, with it only available on macOS for now. The company does say, however, that compatibility with Windows 10 is being worked on.

For a step-by-step guide on the setup head here, or simply watch the video that GoPro has created below.

While we’re pleased to see that the action camera specialists have found a new use for their product in the work/study from home age, we do hope that this functionality will extend to older generations of Hero cameras.

If you don’t have the latest GoPro model, but do have a Canon or Fujifilm mirrorless camera, you can see whether it can serve as a webcam too.
