PC and Xbox players won’t be getting Spider-Man in Marvel’s Avengers

The official PlayStation Blog has announced that Spider-Man will be coming to Marvel’s Avengers as an exclusive for PlayStation.

While no exact release date has been announced “early 2021” has been provided as the release window for Spider-Man.

For the longest time this game only had six playable characters: Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor, Hulk and Ms Marvel – Kamala Khan. Recently it was announced that Hawkeye would be joining the roster as post-launch, free DLC. Spider-Man will be added in the same way.

This continues a trend of Spidey being exclusive to Sony’s console. Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018 is still only playable on the PlayStation 4 and the upcoming PlayStation 5 game featuring Miles Morales will continue this.

This announcement has left a bad taste in the mouths of many who were planning to pick the game up. For those on Xbox and PC they are essentially paying the same amount of money and getting less content. As each hero added to the game opens up a completely new playstyle complete with separate loot, skill trees and more, this exclusivity is much more impact than it may seem.

On top of this Spider-Man is an absolute fan favourite and we can definitely see him being the top pick out of the now eight announced playable heroes. Being locked out of access to the character because of hardware will be a massive letdown for many.

All we can really hope for is some kind of levelling of the playing field with the other two platforms getting their own hero. Spawn would be an amazing choice in this regard given the character’s connection to Spider-Man, but that’s just us spitballing.

As for how Peter Parker will look once he’s in Marvel’s Avengers this will again be a unique take on the character.

“Steve Ditko set the standard with his Spider-Man design, and John Romita Sr. evolved it into an icon recognized the world over. Fans can expect to see Ditko and Romita’s influence in our take on the hero, with nods to other talented artists that have defined the character’s look over his long history,” Says Jeff Adams, associate art director at Crystal Dynamics.

With the art style of the heroes in this game also being a point of contention from the community, we’ll again have to wait and see what the developer cooks up.

Marvel’s Avengers launches on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Stadia on 4th September 2020. Throughout August various open and closed betas will be taking place with those on PlayStation 4 getting early access.
