Not only did we get a Nintendo Direct, but the 3D Mario rumours were true

After nearly a year without a Nintendo Direct, the company has finally graced us with an important one, celebrating 35 years of Super Mario. More than that, however, is the confirmation of multiple rumours regarding Switch ports of the various 3D Mario games.

The full direct, which you can watch below, was announced and released in short order. Nintendo has likely learned its lesson about announcing these events far in advance and building up hype that may not be warranted.

Here’s a quick summary of the announcements and they’re release dates:

  • Game & Watch Super Mario Bros. edition: 13th November 2020.
  • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury: 12th February 2021.
  • Super Mario Bros. 35: 1st October 2020 – 3rd March 2021.
  • Mario Kart Live Home Circuit: 16th October 2020.
  • Various limited time events and products in the next few months collated here.
  • Super Mario All-Stars: Today.
  • Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy): 18th September 2020.

Oh boy that’s a lot of stuff.

Starting with arguably the biggest news is the Super Mario 3D All-Stars announcement. This collection includes Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy.

Not only are these argued as being some of the best games ever made, but rumours about a combined Switch port like this have been flying around for months. With the quality of the games, higher resolution, a 16:9 aspect ratio and included soundtracks make this a massive value product.

As for first party physical items we did not expect to see a special Game & Watch or the Mario Kart Live Home Circuit RC car system. The idea to combine physical RC cards with augmented reality (AR) by way of a camera on the car and the Switch itself is so damn clever. We’ve seen this done before but to have some Mario Kart in real life is astounding.

The fact that you can also buy a Luigi kart on its own is also tempting for potential buyers out there, especially the little brothers of the world of which Luigi is a patron saint.

The last announcement we want to focus on is Super Mario Bros. 35, which is basically Mario battle royale by way of Tetris 99. This game borrows from Tetris 99 in its layout where each player is on their own but can affect the games of others. It is also free for subscribers of Nintendo Switch Online.

It’s worth noting because in June of this year a battle royale multiplayer mod for the original Super Mario Bros. was created by a fan, became immensely popular, and then was shut down by Nintendo. While the official game and that fan version are very different, it’s still iffy in our minds.

That aside this has been an amazing Nintendo Direct. Was it worth waiting a year for? Maybe. We’ll have to wait for some of those announced games and products to be in our hands first.

For that more information and details are available on the dedicated 35th anniversary site.
