Intel teases Rocket Lake desktop CPUs ahead of AMD’s Zen 3 reveal

October is starting to earn the “Techtober” moniker many pundits have christened it with as announcements, teasers and full on product launches occupy seemingly everyday of the calendar.

Not content with letting AMD have its time in the limelight, Intel has joined the fray with a teaser of its 11th Gen Intel Core desktop processors.

When we say tease, we mean that as the news came by way of a Medium blog penned by Intel vice president and general manager of client computing group desktop workstations and gaming, John Bonini.

The majority of the blog sees Bonini talking up Intel’s 10th Gen processors and how they helped game developers and overclockers.

But right at the end of the blog the VP teased Rocket Lake, the desktop iteration of Intel’s 11th Gen processors.

“I’m also happy to confirm that the next generation 11th Gen Intel Core desktop processors (codenamed ‘Rocket Lake’) is coming in the first quarter of 2021 and will provide support for PCIe 4.0,” wrote Bonini.

Aside from a mention that the CPU will be “another fantastic processor for gaming” that’s about all we’re getting for now.

The mention of PCIe 4.0 is a good thing given desktop builders have only been able to make use of AMD hardware to take advantage of the tech until now.

What we’re interested to see is what process Rocket Lake is built on. We know that 7nm is still out of Intel’s reach but will Rocket Lake be a 14nm or 10nm process? The folks over at Anandtech reckon its another 14nm processor and we tend to agree with them but we will have to wait until a proper reveal to know for certain.
