Telkom is launching its own streaming services, and you get to make the content

For many years we’ve been hearing talks of mobile network operators pivoting to a new business model that includes not just connectivity by delivery of content as well.

We’ve seen this in some regards, particularly Vodacom’s Video Play that offers on demand content but there is a new challenger entering the space – Telkom.

This afternoon we received an email from Telkom announcing a competition for TelkomONE.

Okay, but what the heck is TelkomONE? In short, it’s a new streaming service.

The service is set to launch in November and for now we’re told that it will be a streaming service that South Africans can subscribe to to view oodles of locally produced content.

Pricing is yet to be announced and Telkom isn’t giving us much more information than what we’ve outlined above.

That having been said, a local streaming service, packed with local content is just the sort of thing we love to see so Telkom has piqued our curiousity.

As for the competition, this is where you dear reader come in.

Telkom is sourcing locally produced content and if you are a producer of content in on of the three genres below, you can with a R100 000 cash injection for your production.

The genres are:

  • Mobivela – Like a telenovela but for mobile. “Entrants will be judged on their ability to capture and tell a real and original short-story. Telenovela’s are characterised by a continuing melodramatic storyline and permanent cast. The ultimate winner should demonstrate the ability to make viewers see themselves in the cast/characters,” writes Telkom.
  • Comedy – “In this category the judges will be looking for an individual with the talent to make viewers laugh through great story-telling leveraging relatable moments. The type of comedy may vary from stand-up performance, Parody, and Spoof right through to Satire,” the telco explained.
  • Lifestyle – “Here the panel will scrutinize concepts ranging from, and not limited to a magazine show, cooking, travel, exercise or edutainment content. The deciding factor will be the content producer’s ability to provide good escapism to viewers looking to be inspired and entertained,” Telkom said.

The competition runs from 12th October through to 30th November 2020 at 18:00 and you must be at least 18 years old or older to enter.

Your entry must comprise one to three (no less than one, no more than three) clips five to ten minutes in length.

Once you have your clips head to this website to submit your content.
