Have your say in the school calendar of 2022

With the year ending many are looking at 2021, but the Department of Basic Education (DBE) is instead looking at the school calendar of 2022.

The department has shared proposed school calendars for 2022 in which, for the first time according to the DBE, inland and coastal schools will follow different schedules and open on different dates.

The proposed calendars are at the bottom of this story but they require some discussion beforehand.

As you may have guessed by the word “proposed”, these are not set in stone and in fact the DBE is asking the public for their inputs when it comes to this matter.

Before 15th January 2021 you can directly email those handling the project at the DBE. Your email should be sent to Mr. S.Mlambo (mlambo[dot]s[at]dbe[dot]gov[dot]za) and should CC manake[dot]l[at]dbe[dot]gov[dot]za.

“The school calendar is an important planning tool for the country, for business, for families, for tourism and hospitality industry, for transport, for individuals, for entertainment, for schools, for the economy in general,” writes the DBE.

This is something we have to agree with. Even if you’re out of school and without children of your own we encourage you to check out the calendars below and email the department should you have feedback.

The only thing we can think of suggesting is some plan in place should the calendar be impacted by a world changing event such as the pandemic experienced in 2020. This year’s school year was irreparably damaged by the lockdown and lack of flexibility in the country’s education system.

Proposed Inland Cluster School Calendar 2022. Includes the Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West provinces.

Proposed Coastal Cluster School Calendar 2022. Includes the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces.
