Steam’s News Hub leaves the testing phase

Back in March Steam revealed the News Hub, a centralised and personalised way to keep up to date with the games and software on the platform that you care about. Now in December this feature has taken off the training wheels and is ready for primetime.

The News Hub is, like many new features on the platform, part of Steam Labs. You can think of Steam Labs as Early Access for Steam features, where those you like to help development can opt in to mess around with new content and then provide feedback for the final version.

This is again what happened here as Steam rolls out the feature today and replaces what you’d usually see when you visit https://store.steampowered.com/news/. If you go to that URL now the new News Hub will be there to greet you.

“The News Hub is designed to be flexible and personalized around your games and preferences, with many customization options built in. By default, the News Hub shows posts from the games you play, wishlist, follow, or are recommended. Or, if you want to take full control, you can change all that with a few quick setting adjustments in the left-hand menu. Plus, you can choose to follow and receive news from dozens of top gaming news sources across a variety of languages,” reads the announcement from Steam.

The announcement has also highlighted some key features of News Hub, which we’ve summarised below. You can also click on the links in each bullet to be taken to the specific part of the News Hub related to it.

  • Personalized feed of news: Limits news to games in your library, on your wishlist and titles you have chosen to follow.
  • More gaming news choices: News from “dozens” of gaming sites will also appear in the hub.
  • See what’s coming up: Sign up or follow for upcoming events and releases.
  • Game updates and patch notes: Updates about game updates… and patches.
  • Explore posts from top games: A featured channel to see certain content from “top games”.
  • Official Steam announcements: Provides information for both gamers and game developers using Steamworks.
  • Fine-grained control: Many options to tailor what news you see. There’s a mute for games or game sites if you’d prefer not to see them.
  • Full Language Support: Official Steam news and posts available in “a huge variety of languages”.
  • Mobile friendly: The hub has been designed to look good on smaller screens.
