The tumultuous 2020 Matric exams enter the final week

Today, 10th December, marks the final week for the embattled 2020 Matric exam season as the country’s students power through to 17th December which will mark the day of the last examination.

This is, of course, an extension of the 15th December deadline which was originally the last day of the exams. Because of leaked papers Mathematics Paper 2 and Physical Science Paper 2 will be rewritten with the latter taking place on 17th December.

This, according to the Department of Basic Education (DBE) is the only way to ensure a level playing field when it comes to the fairness of the exams, as the department has been completely unable to conclude just how many students were able to access the leaked papers before sitting to write the exams, as we covered a few days ago.

Aside from those two, Computer Applications Technology (CAT) and Information Technology (IT) practical exams will also be redone on 15th December. These are being done not because of leaks but because of technical issues experienced by certain schools and exam centres. As both subjects require the use of computers to be written, issues on the day of exams prevented students from completing their examinations.

Only those affected by these issues for CAT and IT will rewrite, while the Mathematics and Physical Science rewrites apply to all Matric students across the country.

After one of the most difficult education years ever due to the ongoing pandemic the forced rewrites were not received well by students and their families. You can see some of the justifiably upset comments about this in the replies of a DBE tweet announcing the new dates for the rewrites.

After 17th December and the last exam is finished results will be released on 22nd January 2021. This date, however, was set by the DBE before the leaked exams and the rewrites. It’s not clear if the release of the results will be delayed because of this, but it has not been changed by the department at the time of writing.
